WELCOME TO THE SCOTT COUNTY YOUNG MARINES
YOUR JOURNEY STARTS HERE
The Scott County Young Marines, located in Scottsburg, Indiana, is proud to be part of the nation's premier, award-winning youth leadership and character development program for boys and girls ages 8 through the completion of high school.
Founded in 1959 in Waterbury, Connecticut, the Young Marines has grown from a single unit with a handful of boys into a nationally recognized organization with hundreds of units across the United States and overseas. For more than six decades, the Young Marines has earned a reputation for developing confident, responsible, and community-minded young people.
Although our program incorporates military customs, courtesies, and traditions to teach structure, discipline, and respect, the Young Marines is not a military recruiting program or a stepping stone into military service. Our mission is to develop responsible citizens, ethical leaders, and productive members of society. Whether our graduates choose college, a skilled trade, public service, the workforce, or military service, the values they learn as Young Marines prepare them for success in any path they choose.
Our program strengthens the lives of America's youth by promoting:
* Leadership
* Discipline
* Teamwork
* Community Service
* Self-confidence
* Academic achievement
* Honor and respect for our nation's veterans
* Good citizenship
Living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle through our nationally recognized Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) program
The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of every member through positive challenges, mentorship, and hands-on experiences.
Members participate in physical fitness, leadership schools, camping trips, educational activities, color guard, community service projects, outdoor adventures, and
service to their communities while building friendships that last a lifetime.
Every new Young Marine begins with 26 hours of Recruit Training, where they learn our history, customs and courtesies, close order drill, physical fitness,
leadership fundamentals, military rank structure, and the importance of teamwork. Upon graduation, Young Marines proudly earn the right to wear the
Young Marine uniform and continue advancing through the ranks while earning ribbons and awards recognizing achievement in leadership,
community service, first aid, swimming, academic excellence, physical fitness, and drug resistance education.
The only requirement for membership is that youth be between the ages of 8 and the completion of high school and remain in good standing at school.
At the Scott County Young Marines, we are committed to building the next generation of leaders—young people of character who embody our four core values:
.
The mission of the Young Marines is to positively impact America’s
future by providing quality youth development programs that nurture and
develop its members into responsible citizens who promote a healthy,
drug-free lifestyle.
